UVM Recital Hall

...gorgeously blended...hauntingly beautiful...singing as sublime as the music; firmly projected but unforced, velvet-finished. You could spend your money on a week at a spa, or several sessions with a shrink, but you would be hard pressed to have a more warming, calming experience than this." -- Kansas City Star

Choral music has traditionally been a favorite of the Lane Series audience during the holidays, and this year we are pleased to bring you one of the leading ensembles in vocal chamber music: Lionheart. Acclaimed for its "smoothly blended and impeccably balanced sound" (Allan Kozinn, the New York Times) and a favorite of NPR’s Performance Today, Lionheart is best known for its interpretation of medieval and Renaissance a cappella music, with Gregorian Chant as the keystone of its repertoire. For our holiday concert, the ensemble will perform the program “Il Laudario di Cortona: Christmas in Medieval Italy.” The “Laudario” is a priceless 13th-century manuscript that contains not only the earliest surviving music of the Italian lauda (devotional song) tradition, but also the earliest collection of poetry in the Italian language. Combining original scholarship with its own vibrant, engaging performance style, Lionheart gives new life to these charming and joyful chant-like melodies along with repertoire from the later styles that grew out of them.
