“...avatar of ‘post classical’ music—the virtuosic alternative string quartet...vital and brilliant” – The New Yorker
Pre-Performance talk at 6:30pm
Acclaimed as “one of the most exciting quartets around” by the magazine The Strad, ETHEL has been a pioneer of post-classical, contemporary concert music since its founding in 1998. This New York City-based ensemble (Kip Jones and Tema Watstein, violin; Ralph Farris, viola; Dorothy Watson, cello) is recognized for the exuberance and artistry which the members bring to the stage through their traditional-yet-forward-moving approach to today’s classical music, as well as their imaginative programming. The group has premiered more than fifty new works over the past three years by such composers as Phil Kline, Osvaldo Golijov, Julia Wolfe, Steve Reich, Kenji Bunch, and many more. ETHEL’s program “Grace” features a suite from “The Mission” soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, special music honoring the 20th anniversary release of Jeff Buckley’s Grace, and quartets by Phil Kline, Mary Ellen Childs, and other contemporary composers.
