“Mr. Kahane wrapped his strong catchy melodies and stylish piano playing in arrangements for strings, winds and brass that revealed a composer’s ear for color, balance and counterpoint. Mr. Kahane’s singing, comfortable and nuanced in past encounters, was a revelation here; at times he combined a pop balladeer’s directness with a jazz singer’s fluid phrasing, reaching new heights of expressiveness.” – The New York Times
Gabriel Kahane is a classically trained singer/pianist/composer who has two intersecting areas of creative work: as a popular singer/songwriter with hints of contemporary indy and folk, and as a classical composer who has been commissioned by Carnegie Hall, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, American Composers Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, The Caramoor Festival, and more. The New York Times recently profiled his latest commission, Gabriel’s Guide to the 48 States (based on the WPA Guides), for Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. In a sense his songs are really modern lieder – poetry and music together performed by a truly gifted musician with a voice of great beauty. He is joined by the exceptional multi-instrumentalist Rob Moose, who plays with the renowned bands Bon Iver and Antony and the Johnsons and freelances with artists as diverse as Sir Paul McCartney and the Orchestra of St. Lukes.
