Vermont dance artists Paul Besaw and Selene Colburn present two wildly divergent works in a shared evening of work. As lead creator, Besaw also directs the theatre collective Agnes Table in Momma at the Gate, a new nonlinear performance that weaves together stories of women, war, loss, and survival. Inspired by the writings of German playwright Bertolt Brecht and Korean author Park Wan-Suh, the work incorporates Korean history, language, clothing, and movement into a realm that transcends cultural and historical boundaries. Premiering at Seoul Institute of the Arts in May 2013, this work features an international cast; collaborators are gathering from Korea and around the United States. Colburn’s Potboilers is comprised of three duets exploring the intersections of comedy, theatricality, physicality, and performance conventions. The Speilpalast Cabaret’s Phinn Sonin and dance artist Clare Byrne portray ice skaters and ingénues; Brooklyn-based collaborator Paul Benney and Colburn present a new duet that is part of her ongoing study of natural history museums.
