“[Prieto’s] pieces are emotionally charged and stylistically diverse, carried along not just by rhythm but also through lovely harmonized passages, horn fanfares, and powerfully conjured moods.” —Wall Street Journal
Ralph Alessi, trumpet; Peter Apfelbaum, tenor and soprano saxophone, melodica, percussion; Felipe Lamoglia, alto and soprano saxophone; Dafnis Prieto, drums; Charles Flores, bass; Osmany Paredes, piano
Dafnis Prieto’s arrival in the US has been compared to that of an asteroid hitting New York. A Cuban immigrant, Prieto’s revolutionary drumming techniques and fresh compositions—melding Afro-Cuban rhythms and modern jazz harmonies—influenced both the Latin and jazz music scenes through his performances with Eddie Palmieri, Henry Threadgill, and Chico O’Farrill. As a Grammy-nominated composer, he has created music for dance, film, chamber ensembles, and for his own bands on such acclaimed recordings as About The Monks, Absolute Quintet, and Taking the Soul for a Walk. A flexible and broad-minded performer, Prieto breathes new life into post-bop and Latin jazz.
