“Rokia Traoré will sing for those lucky enough to gain entry into paradise.”
—Daily Mail and Guardian (Johannesburg)
Rokia Traoré is perhaps the most adventurous singer-songwriter in Africa today, forging a fresh new direction by combining blues and rock with the traditional music of Malian griottes. Although she sings in the Malian language of Bambara, her modern sound—driven by her Gretsch electric guitar—distinguishes her from traditional Malian singers. With a striking voice and sparse arrangements that highlight African instruments like the balafon, n’goni, and kora as well as electric guitar and bass, her performances are as mesmerizing as the delicate rhythms of her albums. Traoré “has joined an elite club of superstars” (Toronto Sun).
