GIMP is a collision of two worlds coming together that are not supposed to co-exist. "Gimp" is a word we are taught not to use, as we are taught not to stare at people who have physical disabilities. But "gimp" also means "fighting spirit," "interwoven fabric," and "trembling with ecstasy," and it is all those meanings that truly define GIMP. Heidi Latsky, known for her incredible virtuosity with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, challenges us to re-think conventional notions about dance, performance, and body image. The performance features artists with a variety of limbs in a work that transcends physical differences onstage. GIMP reflects Latsky's mission to make work that honors and underscores the beautiful and complex phenomenon of "difference" with virtuosity, passion, and a range of dynamics. Latsky's fascination with different body types and distinctive ways of moving creates a system of "movement portraits" that capture each performer at a given moment of time and expresses their unique personality and emotions. GIMP creates a tangible sensuality, a touch of voyeurism, and a new frame of reference.
