". . . ancient and utterly contemporary . . . like some African answer to Hendrix."
—The Guardian (UK)
". . . a genius, a living proof that the blues comes from the region of Segu." —TAJ MAHAL
Bassekou Kouyate is one of the true masters of the ngoni, a “spike lute” and ancestor of the banjo found throughout West Africa. A virtuoso picker and musical visionary whose work blurs the lines between West African and American roots music, Bassekou has jammed with Bonnie Raitt and Bono, won praise from Eric Clapton, and is featured on Bela Fleck’s 2010 Grammy-winning album Through Down Your Heart. Since 2005, Bassekou has led Ngoni ba, the first-ever group built around not one but four ngonis—producing an exhilarating display of percussive attack and incredible picking techniques. Fresh off performances at the Vancouver Olympics and as part of Bela Fleck’s Africa Project tour, Kouyate and Ngoni ba have a reputation for turning the curious into devoted fans.
