“One of the genuine living treasures of the Boston jazz scene.” —CityGusto
Formed in 1971, pivotal Boston trio The Fringe have spent the past four decades harnessing the primitive forces of jazz as a revved-up outfit that recalls John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins at their loosest. Comprised of tenor saxophonist George Garzone, bassist John Lockwood, and drummer Bob Gulloti, The Fringe plays music without “tunes,” funk grooves, chord changes, or fixed rhythms, but that always comes from the heart and gut. Without a piano, guitar, or other “chord” instrument, the group uses their formidable technique to explore the almost limitless tonal possibilities their free-thinking approach provides. A weekly fixture at Somerville’s Lily Pad club, The Fringe are an amazingly cohesive unit (even in the midst of a three-way improvisation), and an almost perfect incarnation of beauty, intricacy, and freedom.
