“Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser.” —AllMusic
“The Hammond B-3 organist Dr. Lonnie Smith is a reliable captain of soul and can make almost any groove feel deep and inevitable.” —New York Times
Acclaimed guitarist and composer John Scofield is a universally-revered improviser who walks a tightrope between post-bop, fusion, and soul-jazz. One of the “big three” of current jazz guitarists (along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell), Scofield’s off-kilter and distinctive rock-centric sound has been an important part of the groups of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Joe Henderson, and Herbie Hancock. Scofield’s work with his own groups over the last four decades has cemented his status as a player on forefront of jazz consciousness.
Simultaneously legendary and enigmatic, Dr. Lonnie Smith is one of the most dominant and original voices on the Hammond B3 organ. A phenomenal B3 burner who can “light up a room with visceral intensity or lay down some of the nastiest funk ever played” (JazzTimes), Smith has been named Organ Keyboardist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association no fewer than five times. Smith’s riffs have been sampled and remixed by countless rap, house mix, acid jazz and dance artists, and his interpretations of The Beatles, John Coltrane, Beck, Eurythmics, and Jimi Hendrix are transformative.
