As legend has it, the first time Kamasi Washington picked up a saxophone, he belted out Wayne Shorter’s Sleeping Dancer Sleep On note-for-note. With raw creativity and an uncanny ear in the vein of Pharoah Sanders, John Coltrane, and other astral jazz pioneers, Washington has become one of the most exciting jazz musicians of the 21st century. His already-seminal 2015 triple LP, The Epic, earned consistently ecstatic accolades from the usual suspects of music reviewers, including Pitchfork and NPR. Washington was also a member of the studio band that helped make Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly an undisputed rap masterpiece. Washington's forthcoming EP, Harmony Of Difference, comes out this summer.
