George Orwell's classic novel begins with the sentence, “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” On April 4, 2017, independent movie theaters across the US and Canada are participating collectively in a screening of 1984 starring John Hurt, who died last month. April 4 is the day that Orwell's protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. All participating theater owners are jointly programming this remarkable film as a way to show solidarity for the importance of the National Endowment for the Arts as a beacon of free speech and creative expression through entertainment. This event provides a chance for communities around the country to show their unity and have their voices heard. Merrill’s Roxy Theater in Burlington donates the proceeds to benefit the Flynn’s educational programs; come celebrate freedom of expression and support the Flynn.
