“The three spontaneously weave compact pieces full of intricate, multi-threaded interaction. The group can construct spare, riveting music from the quiet hush of bristling detailed textures. They can also shape improvisations that build to a full-bore rush of heated intensity.”
................--Signal to Noise
Achim Kaufmann, piano; Frank Gratkowski, clarinets, alto saxophone; Wilbert de Joode, bass
Dutch trio Kaufmann-Gratkowski-de Joode play intense and inventive chamber music that focuses on a heightened perception of group counterpoint. There is a seamless feel of continuity in the group’s improvisations, which are at turns both quirky and unpredictable. With subtlety and shared attention to sonic detail, the group strikes a rare balance of energy and transparency. The group’s latest release, palaë, was released in 2007 and followed by a North American tour.
