“Maybe the most successful meeting of African and Western classical traditions yet.” —Afropop Worldwide
French cellist Vincent Segal and Malian kora master Ballaké Sissoko surprised the music world in 2009 with their uniquely elegant Chamber Music, an album that proposed a rich hybrid of traditions and earned the duo spots on best-of lists across Europe and North America. Segal and Sissoko have since continued refining their musical reveries, drawing on West African troubadour songs and the rich heritage of Baroque music to develop an acute and thoroughly modern sensibility. Their most recent record, Musique de Nuit (Night Music), captures the duo listening closely to one another, responding with seemingly psychic connections to each note. Their hauntingly beautiful harmony takes listeners on an extraordinary musical voyage in the pin-drop acoustics of the UVM Recital Hall.
Presented in association with the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity, and Multicultural Affairs through the UVM President’s Initiative for Diversity.
