“Turns out the combination of cutting edge classical music and the work of an arty rock hero can sound pretty sweet.” —WBUR

Shortly after David Bowie’s passing in January 2016, composer and conductor Evan Ziporyn created the Ambient Orchestra to perform Philip Glass’ Bowie-inspired symphonies, Low and Heroes. Drawing on stunning cellist Maya Beiser as the voice of Bowie, the overwhelming success of the inaugural concert led Ziporyn to continue exploring the seemingly endless Bowie catalogue. He selected Bowie’s tragically self-aware swan song, Blackstar—written and recorded in the artist’s final year—to arrange and conduct. The full orchestra channels Bowie’s light-years-ahead music, rendering the subtleties more subtle as Beiser’s cello interprets Bowie’s lyrics with haunting entrancement.
