“An 11 on a 10-point scale.” —Seattle Weekly

In 1970, writer James Baldwin and anthropologist Margaret Mead recorded a conversation on the defining subject of the American experience: race. Using this conversation as its centerpiece, choreographer Donald Byrd—who founded Seattle-based Spectrum Dance Theater and plays Baldwin in the piece— teamed with playwright Anna Deveare Smith to craft a theater of the mind, senses, and soul. Spectrum explores these singular 20th century thinkers to inform the current conversation around racial and cultural equity. Spectrum is composed of artists from diverse backgrounds and makes world-class dance accessible to all audiences.

Presented in association with the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity, and Multicultural Affairs through the UVM President’s Initiative for Diversity.
