Guest conductor Sarah Ioannides makes her VSO debut, closing out the VSO’s 85th season with a wonderfully creative program, starting with George Gershwin’s ridiculously fun Cuban Overture, which was inspired by a vacation Gershwin took to Havana. The VSO has partnered with the Flynn and UVM Lane Series to commission Riots and Prayers from renowned composer and activist Daniel Bernard Roumain, and the world premiere performance rounds out the first half of the program. Sergei Prokofiev’s spectacular and playful fifth symphony which he composed while World War II was raging as “a hymn to free and happy mankind,” offers a brilliant close to a brilliant season.
