“The kind of group that world-music fans have always been thrilled to discover: vital, accomplished, local, unplugged, deeply rooted.” — New York Times

Raised in the small village of El Clavo, on the Caribbean coast, Betsayda Machado is for many the voice of Venezuela. Now at the peak of her international profile—thanks to her rural field recordings and projects with her band La Parranda El Clavo—Machado is at long last bringing widespread attention to the Venezuelan Afro-soul genre tambor. With dense polyrhythms, call-and-response harmonies, and preserved ties to African origins, tambor has resurfaced as a conduit for voicing the wounded, indomitable heart of a country in turmoil. The music this group makes—pulsing, spirit-shaking percussion wrapping Machado’s full-throated, emotionally rich vocals—is clearly the work of players with a bone-deep understanding of these styles, and each other. Touring in celebration of their 30th anniversary, Machado and La Parranda conjure hypnotic, affecting grooves that teem with life.
