The Young Tradition Youth Commission is a group of young musicians focused this year on learning about the histories of different traditional musics and about the historical links between styles. Since we already know about the styles of traditional music common in Vermont (such as Irish, Cape Breton, and Quebecois), we asked local artists to teach us about some of the traditions we were less comfortable with.

Pete Sutherland, a Burlington-based multiinstrumentalist and singer, brought Oldtime music to the group. Alex Kehler, a Quebecois fiddle, nyckelharpa and cittern player, taught us Swedish music. Jeremiah McLane, an accordionist and pianist, showed us music from central France. And Joanne Garten, a fiddler and dancer, taught us about the different Scottish traditions.

With this knowledge and these tunes, as well as a few of our own, we put together a program designed to show the interconnections between these forms of traditional music through their shared histories. We hope you enjoy!

Picture the Flynn’s MainStage lobby, filled and animated on a Saturday morning with dozens of families, babies with their older siblings, caregivers, grandparents, all joining in together to bounce joyfully along to music. Join us for our new free family musical programs held in the Flynn’s lobby on the following Saturday mornings at 10:00 AM. Each of these events is characterized by a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere with families encouraged to choose their own adventure in terms of how long they engage with any activity, whether they use our always available headphones for persons with sensitivities to sound, whether they dance with their eyes or their whole selves, every family belongs at the Flynn Free Family series.

Each hourlong event begins at 10 am. Attendance is free, but pre-registration is suggested, although walkups are also welcome.
